usagiOne of my favorite action figures when I was a kid was the Usagi Yojimbo one my mother had purchased for me when the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle line was released. I had a fascination back in the day with Martial Arts and Samurais and Usagi was the coolest. Stan Sakai who has been doing Usagi Yojimbo comics for about 34 years now and he’s still rocking it after all this time as it’s writer and illustrator. A coupe of weeks ago, they came out with a miniseries for Usagi Yojimbo called The Hidden and I wanted to read and review that comic for you guys for today. When the comic starts, there are two men running away from a clan and it seems that they may have stolen something very valuable from the clan as they are trying to kill these men and take back what seems to be theirs. After not retrieving their item, they leave the bodies in this small community for the authorities to find. When Usagi goes to visit the town’s inspectors, Usagi becomes interested in the changes that are happening in Japan and why there are two dead bodies in this town.

3002958p2I have to say that after reading this comic, I am definitely excited for what the future holds for this series. Usually, the storylines do not go for more than one or two issues at a time, but to think this is one of seven issues to come out. That leaves a lot of possibilities as to where this story could end up going. One thing that I definitely enjoyed that Sakai threw in their is a little historical significance because some of you may think they are taking a religious turn, but this actually happened to Japan. There was a time when Christianity was entering or trying to slither it’s way into Japanese culture and I think it’s cool that we are seeing it in the comics. It’s fun to see how the characters are going to handle this issue. The artwork is very simple and classic black and white artwork so if you don’t like what you see to the left of this paragraph then don’t bother. If you enjoy great story telling then this is one you are going to want to pick up for sure. It also helps if you are into Ronin and Samurai and feudal Japan. Check out my grades below:
