3000825Here is what has happened leading up to issue four: A wealthy Russian man has invited some of the world’s best cooks from all over for a huge dinner. He tells them of a game where there are 100 candles burning and they tell scary stories that are involved with food until the last candle burns out or everyone quits in the samurai game of Kaidan. The first issue saw a story of a ramen chef who refuses to help a beggar while a band of pirates get more than they bargained for after a woman drowns. The second issue tells the tale of a man who is so obsessed with Horse meat that he eats all of his horses, but they come back to haunt him. The second story deals with a man who just wants to be a cook, but when he joins a school, he doesn’t realize that they are ass goblins. The third issue deals with a chef who develops a boil that wants to eat everything in sight while the second story deals with an evil French instructor who gets whats coming to him when he messes with a demon. In this issue, we get the tale of a snow witch who warns a boy not to speak of her name or else. The second story is about a village that is starving to death and the lengths they resort to.

HUG 4 Snow Woman PG 04-thumb-500x718-851953Overall, I thought that the series was pretty interesting as it had some really cool stories. As far as this issue is concerned though, I was not a huge fan of the second story or at least the way it ended. It was an okay story to begin with, but it’s a tale of gluttony and how they were so selfish in their hunger that they ate the god of hunger and they paid for it. The first story was pretty cool, but in the end it was very predictable because you could figure out the ending. I am a strong believer that if you start strong then you have to finish strong, but the one thing I will say is that the series was enjoyable. Who would have ever thought that Anthony Bourdain was going to do comic books, but he did it so chalk that one up for the history books. The artwork through out every issue was enjoyable and it was definitely the same for this one as it featured two new artists in Francesco Francavilla (Afterlife With Archie) and Irene Koh (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). If you want something a little different than check out this series, otherwise check out my grades below:
