There is always a reason to be excited every Wednesday for it is New Comic Book Day (NCBD) which means that it’s the day every comic book company releases a new comic. I do have to admit that it’s another exciting week for comics and I have a good one for you guys today because a legendary series has returned after being dormant since 1996 (the original series anyways). So for today, I have The Sandman Universe #1 which features a story by Neil Gaiman (The creator of The Sandman) and was written by Dan Watters (The Shadow: Leviathan), Kat Howard, Nalo Hopkinson, and Simon Spurrier (Six Gun Gorilla) while it was illustrated by Sebastian Fiumara(All Star Batman), Max Fiumara (Abe Sapien), Tom Fowler (Quantum And Woody), Domonike Stanton (House Of Whispers) and Bilquis Evely (DC House Of Horror). There is something wrong going down in the world of dreaming as the dream is lost and their world is cracking at the seams. So, they ask a Raven to track down The Sandman to try and save their world before it is too late.
I definitely feel that this is a series that I need to seriously educate myself in because I kind of had no idea what was happening if I was being honest. I think my issue is mostly just understanding who everyone is and what role do they exactly play in this universe. Other than that< I was definitely able to follow the story, but I was admittedly confused at times if the son of Lucifer was the Sandman? One thing that I will comment on is how amazing the artwork in this comic is to the point that this may be the best comic book I’ve read artistically. There is just so much wonderful detail in every page and there is just so much beautiful colors in every page as well. That was what truly captured my attention was the beautiful artwork that encompassed every inch of the pages. I don’t know how all the artists tackled each page, but they did an amazing job and a lot of credit is due to the colorist Mat Lopes. If you want to check out wonderful worlds and amazing artwork, then this is definitely the comic book you should pick up. I want you guys to know though that this is a one shot that sets up a series of comics that will be released. Check out my grades below:
