Some weeks are great when it comes to New Comic Book Day while some weeks are not so good and that is just par for the course. I definitely think this week’s NCBD was not as exciting as past weeks as a lot of it was just some reoccurring titles plus another The Punisher #1 which I did not pick up. There is however one brand new title that I did pick up this week because it looked like it could be fun and how can you say no to Gwenpool? That is right, today’s title is West Coast Avengers #1 and it was written by Kelly Thompson (Rogue & Gambit) and it was illustrated by Stefano Caselli (The Amazing Spider-Man: Ends Of The Earth). Everyone knows that the original West Coast Avengers consisted of Clint Barton (Hawkeye), Hank Pym (Ant-Man), War Machine, Mockingbird, Wonder Man, and Tigra, but let’s fast forward to the current times. You see some scary land sharks are attacking Santa Monica and the new Hawkeye Kate Bishop calls Clint Barton to help her. After Clint, Kate, and America Chavez are done they decide that they need to put a team together that after some trying auditions will include Kate’s boyfriend Fuse, Gwenpool, and Kid Omega. The team is immediately put to the test when a giant version of OG member Tigra starts attacking Santa Monica, but a surprise new member comes to help.
I have to admit that after reading this issue, I am definitely hooked and it’s really for one reason and that is the writing. I had my doubts about Kelly Thompson after the Rogue & Gambit comic, but she redeems herself with this brand new West Coast Avengers comic. The reason she redeemed herself is that I love the style of the comic and I love the humor in the comic cause it’s right up my alley. They are parodying the way our society is and how obsessed they are with reality television as that is the only way Kate can afford to pay the rest of the team. There is definitely plenty of comedy in this comic to go along with the action that is presented. The only thing I can say to you is wait until you see who shows up at the end and what his name is, it’s absolutely hilarious. The artwork in the comic is great as well and definitely a strong point of the comic as Stefano Caselli does a great job. I am definitely looking forward to seeing what happens in the next issue because it looks like we are going to get more zany fun. Check it out for yourselves and check out my grades below:
